How do I find out how many networks I can have in a particlular vlsm's , i.e
255.255.248.0, how do i work out how many networks I can have in this, also how come they addresses always go up on even numbers ?

u will have 8 subnets and a total of 2046 hosts.

I think you will have 1 subnet with 2046 hosts.

The number of subnets depend on what class of address you're using.

Variable length subnet masking does not depend upon classfull addressing, therfore there is only one network.

The no. of networks depends not only on subnet mask but also with the network id u have.
For exampls if u have class A 10.0.0.0 255.255248.0
it will give u 8192 subnets and 2048 host per subnet.
if u have class B 172.168.0.0 255.255.248.0
the same subnet mask will yield u only 32 subnets of 2048 hosts.
u can make u of subnet calculators to calculate no. of nodes and subnets
