Two WAN Link

We have two offices in two different cities.

1. At present we are using 512kbps leased line for interoffice connectivity.

2. We are planning to have one more leased line of 1mbps capacity from different provider.

3. As backup we have ISDN

We want to achieve,

1. In normal operation we want to use both the link simultaneously i.e. 1.5mbps.

2. In the event of one link goes down we should be able to operate with working link with out any manual settings.

3. In the event of both the link goes down then ISDN link should be online which we are using as backup.

We would like to know how above requirement can be achieved.

Hi,

It is extremely difficult to come up with a solution that will allow you to use full capacity on both your links. Most load-balancing mechanisms work best when the links are of equal bandwidth.

However, here are a few suggestions:

1. Run EIGRP over the 2 links with a variance > 1 specified for it. You can tune the metric settings for EIGRP so that it does unequal-cost load balancing in a 1:2 ratio which would work reasonably work for your two links.

2. Use a floating static route to your networks (point at your BRI interface) which will ensure that the BRI will kick in when your EIGRP routes are down.

With the above, you will be able to satisfy all three of your requirements.

Would the solution given by you will help us to use both the link to the full capacity.

At present we have not got 2nd link it will take 3weeks.

At present we have 2610 router with 2 serial, 1 ISDN, 2 voice port. Will this router will be good enough to handel all our mentioned WAN requirement or we have to go for better router.

The solution I have proposed will enable you to get pretty close to what you want to do...

Actually, I have another suggestion that might be even better. You could use multilink PPP to combine the two links so that instead of appearing as 2 separate links, they appear as a single 1.5Mbps link. In fact, this would give you the best chance of being able to get the full 1.5Mbps. However, the one drawback would be the differential delay provided by the two unqual-bandwidth links..

Either of these solutions will do the job for you, though.

The 2610 router is more than adequate to handle this job for you.

Two more i want to know,

1. Can we use Audio in this combine link and can restick the bandwidth used by it.

2. Same for Video, we are planning to use Video conference on this this combine link and can restick the bandwidth used by it.

Both utility in not on continues basis.

Yes, you can use LLQ with either the MPPP or the individual link scenario. This will support voice/video priority by ensuring a bandwidth reservation for it. In addition, it has the ability to police this traffic in times of congestion.
