What does "Total" and "Authroized" mean for WAN Edge routers?

Hello All,

I am not able to fully understand the meaning of "Authorized" and "Total" number of WAN Edges in the vManage device dashboard.

Also, there are "valid", "invalid" and "staging" statuses for the certificates of the WAN Edges. See attached screenshot.

What is the meaning of all these? I went through many Cisco documents, but they all say the same thing and not at all clear on what they are saying.

Would appreciate if you can throw some light on these very confusing terms.

Thanks,

Mohan

Hello @muthumohan,

From my point of view, "Total WAN edges" represents the total number of WAN edge devices in your SDWAN network. These are all the devices that are physically or virtually deployed as part of your network infrastructure.

On the other hand, "authorized WAN zdges" typically refers to the number of WAN edges that are allowed or authorized to connect and participate in the SDWAN network. In some cases, there might be a licensing or subscription limit that determines how many WAN Emedges can be authorized. If the "authorized" count is less than the "total," it might mean that not all of your WAN edges are currently licensed or authorized to be active.

In terms of certificate, "Valid" cert are certificates on the WAN Edges that have been issued and are currently valid. A valid certificate is essential for secure communication and authentication within the SD-WAN network.

Certificates that are marked as "Invalid" typically indicate a problem with the certificate, such as an expired certificate, a certificate signed by an untrusted authority, or a certificate with incorrect information.

Staging certificates might refer to certificates that are in the process of being deployed or provisioned to the WAN Edges. These certificates are not yet marked as "Valid" because they are still in the staging phase. Once successfully provisioned and validated, they should transition to "Valid" status.

In the context of WAN Edge routers, "Total" and "Authorized" refer to the number of licenses or device instances allowed for a particular router model or product. Let's break down what these terms mean:

  1. Total: "Total" typically represents the total number of instances or licenses available for a specific router model or product. It signifies the maximum capacity or limit for that particular device. For example, if a WAN Edge router has a "Total" count of 100, it means that this router model can support or be licensed for up to 100 instances or devices.

  2. Authorized: "Authorized" represents the number of instances or licenses that have been legitimately allocated or provisioned for a specific router. It indicates how many of the available licenses have been used or assigned. For instance, if a WAN Edge router has 50 "Authorized" instances, it means that 50 out of the total possible instances have been provisioned and are in use.

These terms are essential for managing and understanding the capacity and licensing of WAN Edge routers, ensuring that you stay within the allowed limits for your network infrastructure. It's crucial to keep track of the "Authorized" count to avoid overuse and potential licensing issues.
