Introduction

A new feature was created in Cisco ISE 3.2 Patch 5 to reduce the Time of Reinstalling Cisco ISE (saving at least 40 min), it is called Localized ISE Installation.

Note 1: this feature is also available from ISE 3.1 P9, ISE 3.3 P2 and ISE 3.4 !!!

Note 2: you can use this option to reinstall the Current or Higher Version of Cisco ISE !!!

Localized ISE Installation

How does it work ?

Create a Repository and copy the Cisco ISE ISO to the ISE Node disk (Cisco ISE 3.4 example) :

ise/admin# configure terminal

ise/admin(config)# repository <Repository Name>
ise/admin(config-repository-ISO)# url ftp: //<Server IP Addr>/
ise/admin(config-repository-ISO)# user <username> password plain <password>

ise/admin# copy repository <Repository Name> file ise-3.4.0.608a.SPA.x86_64.iso disk://

Cisco ISE ISOs:

Execute the command:

ise/admin# application configure ise

Selection configuration option
...
[25]Localized ISE Install
...
[0]Exit

25

ISO files present in the disk are:
[1] ise-3.4.0.608a.SPA.x86_64.iso
Choose the ISO you want to install: 1

Computing MD5 hash value of the selected ISO...
File selected: ise-3.4.0.608a.SPA.x86_64.iso (MD5: ac4f8bf234fd1b29ca0453ccd53102a7)

Warning: Verify the MD5 checksum of the ISO before you proceed.

Proceed with Installation? [y/n] y
Copying ISO contents to installer directories. The copy may take around 5 minutes.
% Notice: The appliance will reboot to install the chosen Cisco ISE release now.

Once the Installation is complete, simply follow the configuration via Setup:

**********************************************
Please type ‘setup’ to configure the appliance
********************************************** localhost login: setup

Depending on the Cisco ISE version, the Localized ISE Install option is located in different positions:

  • ISE 3.1 - [36]
  • ISE 3.2 - [36]
  • ISE 3.3 - [38]
  • ISE 3.4 - [25]

Troubleshooting

If the ISO file is not copied, the following error will occur:

ise/admin# application configure ise

Selection configuration option
...
[25]Localized ISE Install
...
[0]Exit

25
Error: No ISO files found on the disk.
Upload the ISO file that you want to install into the disk. Then, select the "Localized ISE install" option.

If the copied ISO file is of an Earlier Version, the following error will occur:

ise/admin# application configure ise

Selection configuration option
...
[25]Localized ISE Install
...
[0]Exit

25
ISO files present in the disk are:
[1] ise-3.2.0.542a.SPA.x86_64.iso
Choose the ISO you want to install: 1

Computing MD5 hash value of the selected ISO...
File selected: ise-3.2.0.542a.SPA.x86_64.iso (MD5: 2e609b6cbeaa5c360d0a09a2a5d3c564)

Warning: Verify the MD5 checksum of the ISO before you proceed.

Proceed with Installation? [y/n] y
Error: You cannot install an earlier version of Cisco ISE (3.2.0). The minimum supported version for installation is 3.4.0

Hi @Marcelo Morais thanks for sharing - I have not had to use this feature so far - what is unclear to me is in which cases is this method useful, as opposed to just mounting the ISO and booting the node off that? I can imagine a use case where the SNS server is in a remote location with slow WAN - then it would be nice to get the ISO file onto the SNS server and build from the SSH. So is it the case that we should pro-actively put the ISO of the current installed ISE version on the disk:// and leave it there for a rainy day?

@Arne Bier ,

you're totally right about "putting the ISO there for a rainy day" !

Another Use Case ... at many of my Customers, I only have access to ISE (CLI and GUI), but not to vCenter, so using this feature is my only option.

Best regards
