Cat5e cabling?

Hello friends,

We have a topology of Cat5e cabling installed at the data centre, now we are working to upgrade main switches to 6500 series and we want to run gigabit connection through copper. Does Cat5e support Gigabit connection or we need to install Cat6 cabling?

Hi,

The WS-G5483 Copper GBIC supported on the Cisco 6500 series switches will support Category 5, Category 5e, or Category 6 UTP/FTP cabling up to 100m. Therefore, your Cat5e should be just fine.

Thank you, i mean No need to replace Cat5e cabling to Cat6 to support gigabit connection, not only for 6500 switches but in general?

Hi,

Most Copper GBICs will support Cat 5e cabling. As you know, GBICs are supported in various platforms, not just 6500s...

Just another note... even switches will build in 10/100/1000 GigE copper ports will also support existing Cat5e cabling...

A bit more info..

The IEEE 802.3ab standard which specifies 1000BaseT mandates the support of GigE over a minimum of Cat5 cabling. Therefore, any copper Gigabit interfaces should run over your existing Cat5e cabling, regardless of whether or not they are Cisco devices.

Could be good idea upgrade to fiber link for the servers. Are you invest in good equipment, for you own security and keep out of problems, upgrade to fiber links.

You will remember me when some server just stop working with out any advice.
