Nexus 9k Multicast and Intervlan Routing

Hi everyone,

I have a quick question on multicast.  I have a single site that runs two Nexus 9396PX switches as it's core.  This is the only portion of the network for this site that is layer 3.  All routing between VLAN's occurs here.  My question is around Multicast requirements between VLAN's.  It is my understanding that the Nexus only supports PIM-SM and from my understanding, that requires a Rendezvous point.  I just want to confirm that this understanding is correct and that my only option for allowing multicast to pass from a source in VLAN X to a destination in VLAN Y is to

1. enable ip multicast-routing

2. configure a Rendezvous point (I would do this on a loopback)

3. add the following command (or some variation of it) to both SVI's: ip pim sparse-mode

From there I would configure IGMP snooping on all layer two devices attached.

The reason I ask if this is the only option is just to broaden my understanding a bit as I know that the Nexus requires an enterprise license and would want to understand if there is another option for allowing intervlan multicast routing in the event an enterprise license was not available.

Thanks!

You are correct Multicast does require the enterprise, see link below

You are correct on your assumptions with the PIM and the RP and enabling IGMP under the interfaces you want to forward multicast.

If you don't have the license on the 9396PX switches you can just forward the request to another device that is the RP that has the correct license.
