SDA: HSRP over L2VN supported?

Hi community,

Is HSRP supported on external gateway when using L2VN and two borders with Layer 2 handoff?

HSRP uses Link Local Multicast (224.0.0.2) which should be flooded when L2 flooding is enabled, right?

So I was expecting HSRP would work fine? Apparently it is not…

My Setup : Two (external) borders with L2handoff configured, each connected to a router with HSRP config between the ports.

  • I can ping all physical IP’s and HSRP IP, so unicast works fine.
  • However HSRP peer remains in ‘unknown’ state
    • Capturing on ports show HSRP hello’s are entering the borders, but not going out?
    • Capturing on a client (located in this L2VN connected to EDGE switch) I do see both hello’s from both routers.

Now the funny part;

When I connect one of the routers to EDGE port (statically assigned in this L2VN/pool) It does work!

Cool!, but not so nice to implement, agree?

Or am I facing a bug here? Not able to test this on different SW/HW

Hi Kristof, I have not validated this specific scenario but it should work. Layer 2 Border should behave same as Fabric Edge Node with respect to Layer 2 Virtual Network L2 flooding. I would suggest a TAC case please. Perhaps update this thread the conclusion if you're feeling charitable. Thanks, Jerome
