Fiber SFP's in SMIP modules DS-X9304-SMIP DS-X9308-SMIP

In the list of gbic's you are to use for SMIP modules found here:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/ps4159/ps6409/ps4358/product_data_sheet09186a00801bc698.html

They say you can use DS-SFP-FCGE-SW. They call this a tri-rate GBIC, saying it can operate 1/2GB FC or 1GB Ethernet.

Is there anything really special about this GBIC? I mean, my experience is that just about any 1/2GB FC GBIC can run short haul fiber ethernet (850nm). I assume this is just marketing, or am I missing something? I just plugged in a rather generic FC gibc (agilent or finisar or the like) and I plugged it into a SMIP and could ping across just fine with no errors.

I'm not sure about modern SFP's but older FC ones would not work as ethernet.

It might be the standard now for all of them to be tri-rate.

I'll have a look around for some old sfp's and give them a go...

Ok, I think I just got very lucky. I happen to use a ton of Finisar FTRJ8519P1BNL which happen to support 1/2GB FC as well as Gig Ethernet.

I've found some older FC sfp's and the certainly don't do ethernet :\
