Hi,
There is one N5K-C5596UP-FA . After getting the delivery found that FC / FCOE is licensed feature and needs to be purchased. Purchased
2 x L-N55-8P-SSK9 licenses because needed 16 port (combination of FC/FCOE). Now Once installed the first L-N55-8P-SSK9 , the licencing shows as permenent( as previously it was evaluation and was counting days). But when tried to install the second L-N55-8P-SSK9 , got below msg.
PDC-N5K-SW-01# install license bootflash:MDS20111124032427514.lic
Installing license failed: A permanent license already exists for the feature
IBQ-PDC-N5K-SW-01#
Then opened case with Cisco Licensing and got below response.
"The part number or the license that you were able to purchased is not incremental. If you still need additional ports, you need to contact your Account Team to order the license or part number with incremental ports."
Request to you guys help how to add the second license so that to be able to use 16 port as fc/fcoe. As already paid for 2 x 8 port license and can not ask for money for another license.

Hello prashant,
Yes, since only 1 license can be installed on a switch at a time, you should be able to make as many FC ports as your module supports.
The # of ports you can create depends on your module. Are you using FC just on your 5596 or do you have additional modules?
As you can see from the specs of the 5596, you start with 48 ports with can do ethernet, FC or fcoe, and you can add on up to 3 additional modules which allows you a total of 96 ports that can be used for ethernet, fc or both (but not at the same time per port):

So, for example, you could have 48 FC ports without purchasing any additional modules, or you could have 24 ethernet and 24 FC ports at the same time. It all depends on what you'd like to do. The licenses merely allow you to activate the ports.

Prashant,
As long as you have purchased enough licenses, you won't have a problem. All ports should activate.
I believe we are fixing this issue so that in the future, the 5500 series will explicitly let you install each license at the same time so its more clear what you're doing, but for now, everything will work.

Hello Prashant,
When you issue a "show int status" command, do you see your fiber channel ports or have you not configured them yet?
You only need to install 1 instance of the license for your ports to work correctly, though you do need to purchase more than one. You can just leave the other license in your bootflash.

Hello Amanda,
Thanks for your response ,
does it mean that if I have installed 1 x 8port license in the switch then i can make more than 8 ports to be in fc / fcoe ? if yes , how many ports i can use as fc/fcoe , if not , what is the procedure so that i can use 16 ports as fc/fcoe ?

Hello Amanda,
Sorry to drag this further. But I just want to make sure that we would not be in trouble later.
Below is the output I have for the show license usage wherein it states the license never expires.

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/switches/ps9441/ps9670/qa_c67-618605_ps9670_Products_Q_and_A_Item.htmlQ. Is the Storage Protocol Services (SPS) license enforced or honor-based? A. The first instance of the SPS license on a system is enforced. Further instances are honor-based. However, similar to on the current generation Nexus 5000 Series Switches, a temporary 120-day trial license goes in effect for the entire chassis upon first use of an FC command.

Hello Mr Mehta
I am scared how to present this at our customer .. how to activate two N55-48P-SSK9 licenses , or how install one N55-48P-SSK9 and one N55-8P-SSK9 ?
If i understand this thread correctly ...we have to buy 2x N55-48P-SSK9 licenses when we want FC on 96 ports (when we add 3 x N55-M16UP) ... but we can only install one license only ?
After installing 1x N55-M16UP module we have to install N55-8P-SSK9 ?
How can we install this N55-8P-SSK9 to activate FC on the N55-M16UP module when we have allready installed N55-48P-SSK9 ?
Thanks for the help in advance !
