Installing CiscoWorks LMS 2.5 on iSCSI

Hi,

We are upgrading to CiscoWorks LMS 2.5 and I have been asked to investigate the possibility of using iSCSI on which to store the CW Application / Databases.

The CW server will be:

Xeon 3.6 / 800 FSB with 4 GB ram.

It will have a local disk, but its "D" drive will be across an iSCSI storage server on which the CW application will be installed. Its network conenction will 100MB to the iSCSI server.

Is this something that has been tried before ? Is this a bad idea, and furthermore, what problems do any of you forsee in this setup ?

Personally I think it is a bad idea to run an application of this type across an iSCSI SAN as it will be loading the application across a network link.

Any help would be appreciated.

I see no reason this would not work, Cisco iSCSI is being used for netboot of complete O/S, once O/S or application is initialized it is running from processor/memory, not a FC disk. A 100MB connection to a MDS IPS will provide a good SCSI I/O rate for the database access after CW is loaded. I do not know the I/O rate requirement is for CW but you would think it to be lower then MS exchange which is about 10k. See whitepaper location below for a bit about iSCSI I/O rates. I believe this would be worth a trial test.

There are other iSCSI design whitepapers available through your local Cisco SE
