Using DCNM Prime for storage Fabric MDS9148

We currently use an older version of DCNM which is installed on a windows server to manage our Fabric switches. This version of DCNM either doesn't need a license or just has never had one installed. We need to upgrade our switches and this version of DCNM will no longer be supported.

I would like to install the DCNM 7.2 OVA and use that to manage our switches. We currently only have 4 switches. However, I would just like to use the essentials licensing for these Fabric switches.  The reason for this is that we'll be getting DCNM licensing for our new LAN switches and I want to use just one DCNM

As far as I know I'll have to request an essentials license because I don't think these switches have ever had a license assigned to them.

It's a little confusing reading the licenses but would this be "remote management" to manage the switches from a desktop? Or is remote management not on the local LAN?

Thanks!

Hi Scott,

Remote management and local management refer to remote to the DCNM Server workstation or local to the DCNM Server Workstation.  If you install the OVA, you can only access DCNM remotely.

A DCNM license for SAN components comes in one of two different editions:

Essential Edition - This free edition is what you get once you install DCNM, and do not apply any license.

Advanced Edition - This is the edition you must purchase. The Advanced Edition license is based on the number and type of switches (MDS 9100, MDS 9200, MDS 9500, Nexus 5000, Nexus 7000).

So, to summarize this, if you install the OVA, there is no LOCAL capability on the server, it is remote only and you would need a DCNM Advanced Edition license to manage the switches.

Best regards,

Jim
