Will format bootflash require the switch to go offline

I have an MDS9124 that I cannot copy a license file to because it returns "Read-Only Filesystem".  I have been recommended to format bootflash.  I need to know if that action will take the switch offline or reboot it so I can request an outage if necessary.  Thanks for any help you can provide.

no, formatting bootflash will not take MDS offline (make sure MDS doesn't lose power when bootflash has no image)

you should be able to re-format the bootflash online.

switch# format bootflash:

After the format complete.  Copy kickstart and system image and license back to bootflash:
