Hi,
I have a range of CE500 switches configured which work fine with our existing Cisco router.
I have recently received a new Business Hub 5, and if I plug a cheap non-Cisco switch into it, and then the server and and a laptop into that switch, happy days - everything works.
When I connect the server to the CE500 switch (which is connected to other CE500 switches), then there is a problem, and the router can't see any of the devices behind the switch.
I've tried setting all the smartports to various options, but none seem to help, and nothing is being passed through the switch.
Is there anything obvious I am missing, as I would really prefer to get this sorted.
(Please forgive my knowledge of Cisco stuff, I am a novice to all things Cisco - baby steps!)

Ok so to keep things simple set your ports to vlan 1 they are probably by default already in this vlan
I would say your BT device is DHCP(giving out the ip addresses dynamically)
Give your switch an ip in this range and make sure the default gateway is the BT router ip address so traffic from you lan pcs knows how to get out
This guide will help explains the setup

anything your unsure of just ask but take some screenshots so i can see whats configured it will help us to fix it if theres an issue

Hi Mark,
Many thanks. The server (2008R2) is actually the DHCP server, and DHCP on the router is turned off.
The address of the router (internal) is 172.20.0.1 and the DHCP assigns that as the default gateway, and it shows that on the laptop when connected to the cheap switch, it gets no DHCP from the server, connected on the Cisco 500 one. (the router, server and laptop are on the same subnet, plugged into the same switch)
The switches are statically assigned, 172.20.0.10 is the first switch.
As I say, it works great with the cheap netgear switch.
Edit: all are on VLAN1

Can you send on a screenshot of the networks settings page on the 500 thats not working , and have you set the laptop with a static ip just to see if its an issue with passing dhcp offers/requests?
