Configuring SF300-24p and 7942G

Hi, all!

The main reason why I'm open the topic - can't connect to switch, I don't know its IP and I can't find it, despite I'm connected directly to ethernet port. I tried to find IP by LanScope or WireShark. Also, I tried to connect by standart CISCO cable (DB-9?). I connected COM to switch's console-port and RJ45 to laptop, also, I tried use old PC with COM (COM to PC , RJ45 to Switch) and putty or HyperTerminal didn't see it.

Have any one ideas how I can connect to switch for managing?

Hi,

My name is Iliya Gatsev from Cisco Technical Support Team.

I would suggest you to use the FindIT Network Discovery tool:
https://software.cisco.com/download/home/286311274/type/283453334/release/2.0.4

Please connect your PC directly to any of the switch ports. If the LED light on the port is showing activity, you will be able to find the current IP address using this tool.

Iliya Gatsev, thx for your reply.

This can helps if switch starts the first time, but for the already configured switch this is thingy doesn't work.

I'm NB in cisco, so I tried to find information about step by step configuring/connecting. And I'm failed. In all manuals, there is general information, like in mipopov's message.

But there is no information like this:

"

- Shutdown your switch

Set Putty to save everything in a file (skip if not needed):

- Session > Logging -- there, change None to Printable Output

- and choose folder with Browse

 Logging - PuTTY Config.png

Set serial settings:

- Speed (baud): 115200

- Databits: 8

- Stop bits: 1

- Parity: None

- Flow control: None

serial -PuTTY Configuration.jpg

Change Putty setting to accept Backspace:   Configuration > Terminal > Keyboard > Change sequences sent by: -> The Backspace Key -- there, change Control-? to Control-H

 Enable Backspace - PuTTY Config.png

Check what number is assigned to COM port (if it is with native the port is always COM1):

Device Manager - COM port number - PuTTY Config.png

You can save this configuration for later use or just hit Open.

- Open SSH session

- Connect Cable to com

- power on the switch (this is needed to see the boot process)

When it fully loads, login and issue the following commands"

If I'll connect cable after booting starts, I'll see the black screen without any signs of "life"

Sorry for Russian translation, but Russian techsup does not work at the weekend, English-language Cisco techsup routes me to the forum.

Hello !

You need serial cable that comes with the switch (it is grey and it is null modem cable with DB9 female on both ends). If computer doesn’t have native COM port, you need also USB to serial adapter.

Download Putty -  link below:

http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/download.html

Set Putty to save everything in a file (skip if not needed):

- Session > Logging -- there, change None to Printable Output

- and choose folder with Browse

 Logging - PuTTY Config.png

Set serial settings:

- Speed (baud): 115200

- Databits: 8

- Stop bits: 1

- Parity: None

- Flow control: None

serial -PuTTY Configuration.jpg

Change Putty setting to accept Backspace:   Configuration > Terminal > Keyboard > Change sequences sent by: -> The Backspace Key -- there, change Control-? to Control-H

 Enable Backspace - PuTTY Config.png

Check what number is assigned to COM port (if it is with native the port is always COM1):

Device Manager - COM port number - PuTTY Config.png

You can save this configuration for later use or just hit Open and power on the switch (this is needed to see the boot process)

When it fully loads, login and issue the following commands:

switchxxxxxx# show ip interface

and you will see the IP address/es

Cheers,

Mike

Do you know the credentials of the switch? usarname and password?

@wycalero

Hi! Thanks for your reply.

As I said previously - I already connected to switch

Now I have new trouble - I didn't know credentials. Is there any opportunity to reset credential without wiping config?

Hello Trubolex_,

Reboot the switch by unplugging the power cord.
You will see a prompt during boot right after the Cisco logo made out of #s that says “Autoboot in 2 seconds – press RETURN or Esc. to abort and enter prom.”

You will see something similar:

Networking device with Marvell ARM CPU core. 128 MByte SDRAM.
I-Cache 16 KB. D-Cache 16 KB. L2 Cache 256 KB. Cache Enabled.

MAC Address : xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx.

Autoboot in 2 seconds - press RETURN or Esc. to abort and enter prom.

Hit Enter and you will get the following startup menu:

    Startup Menu

[1] Download Software
[2] Erase Flash File
[3] Password Recovery Procedure
[4] Set Terminal Baud-Rate
[5] Back
Enter your choice or press 'ESC' to exit:

Select “Password Recovery Procedure” by typing 3, and then hit enter

“Current Password will be ignored” will be displayed.

==== Press Enter To Continue ====

Hit Enter

It will look like the switch is doing nothing, but don't worry just wait - it will boot. Once at the prompt you will need to elevate to privilege mode.
1. Switchxxxxxx>
2. Switchxxxxxx> enable
3. Switchxxxxxx#

If your switch has an existing configuration that you wish to keep (and only update the login credentials as in your case), first ensure to load the saved configuration into memory to update the existing user/password combination. This is a crucial step in gaining access back into your switch, otherwise you would essentially be performing a factory reset on the unit.

4. Switchxxxxxx# copy startup-config running-config

Enter the global configuration mode:
5. Switchxxxxxx# config
6. Switchxxxxxx(config)#

Create a new username and password combination (username can be whatever, password too so long as it meets complexity requirements)

7. Switchxxxxxx(config)# username cisco password your_new_password privilege 15
8. Switchxxxxxx(config)# exit

Save the password into the startup config

9. Switchxxxxxx# copy run start

That will set a new password in the running (and startup config) so that you will be able to access the switch after a reboot.

Enter the following command to reboot the system so that you can log in with your new username and password (verifying it will work in subsequent reboots):

10. Switchxxxxxx# reload

Once the switch powers up, login to verify.

Cheers,

Mike

Вы увидите возможность зайти в загрузочное меню сразу после Cisco лого: “Autoboot in 2 seconds – press RETURN or Esc. to abort and enter prom.”

1. Switchxxxxxx>
2. Switchxxxxxx> enable
3. Switchxxxxxx#

4. Switchxxxxxx# copy startup-config running-config

5. Switchxxxxxx# config
6. Switchxxxxxx(config)#

7. Switchxxxxxx(config)# username cisco password ваш_новый_пароль privilege 15
8. Switchxxxxxx(config)# exit

9. Switchxxxxxx# copy run start

10. Switchxxxxxx# reload
