SG500X-24 Fails to boot

Hello,

I have 2 SG500X-24 Switches that I tried to update to the latest Firmware.

I updated the Boot Firmware first, then the OS Image. Both switches now

boot, but fail midway thru the Software uncompress process and drop

me to a debug prompt.

From here I can enter the debug password and get the list of options,

however none of them are useful.  I need to somehow get the switch

to boot from the firmware image-2 instead of image-1, or to somehow

load the software again via TFTP, but there doesn't seem to be any option

to configure an IP address so the switch can talk to the TFTP server..

Can Anybody help here?

Hi

Please connect the switch through serial port  then press reset button located in front of the panel .then it shows in console switch going to reset keep press reset pin after few sec it will show factory reset settings then it will boot normally after that you can able to configure

Hello,

Thank you for the reply, however that was one of the first things I did, and it does not work.

Somehow the switches were in stack mode, and waiting at the > prompt for a master to come online.

Once I attached a Master, all worked again.

So for Info: Resetting the switch to factory defaults does not reset the Stack Mode/status/Member number of the switch to allow it to boot normally.  This seems like a bug to me. If I reset a switch

to Factory defaults, then the switch should actually be reset, and no settings of any kind should

be kept.  Software ver. in use on these switches is 1.4.0.88

Hello,

I have 1.4.0.88 and boot code 1.4.0.02 and have no issue with native stacking. the moment unit 2 looses connectivity to unit 1 it reboots to standalone mode and both are accessible.

In your case there could be many factors:

1. physical reset did not work

2. both units are still connected after

3. old boot code

you may download show tech-support which could give you something to start with.

I guess it is also good idea to open ticket with STAC team so they can assist you and identify if this is limited to your setup or perhaps there is something affecting the whole series:

Hello

1) All switches running the newest versions. 1.4.0.88 and boot code 1.4.0.02

2) Problem was fixed, by introducing a master switch to the stack. Both switches

in question were running as members, not masters. Even after resetting to Factory defaults.

So thank you everyone, The problem is fixed. Basically as I mentioned above

the stack config is not removed/cleared even after a Factory Reset. This causes the switch

to boot to a > Prompt and just sit there forever while it waits for a stack master.

Hi Keith,

Use the following EXEC mode command to reset unit(s) to stacking default factory values, after reset:

stack reset [unit-id]

Command can be applied to specific unit in stack, all units in stack or on standalone unit
Unit-ID – 1-4. If no unit is specified – command is applied to all units in stack.
Factory default: unit ID 0;   default stacking link types and speeds

Note: Command does not reset device configuration – only stacking parameters

Also please note that clearing the Startup Configuration File and Rebooting is not the same as Rebooting to Factory Defaults. Rebooting to Factory Defaults is more intrusive.

I hope this helps,

Regards,

Aleksandra
