Hi Guys,

One of our customer is planning for 10G connection for their server with minimum 8 SFP port switch and probably will require more SFP port, below is the switch model we propose  and appreciate if  anyone can have a look or suggest the correct switch model for the deployment. Thanks

Cisco Catalyst 3800 series

1 unit Cisco Catalyst 3850-24XU Switch

1 unit Cisco 8 x Gigabit Ethernet/8 x 10 Gigabit Ethernet network modules C3850-NM-8-10G

8 unit 10GbE SFP  (Use for server)

Optional

1 unit Cisco Catalyst 3850-24XS-S switch

8 unit 10GbE SFP (Use for server)

2 unit 1GbE SFP  (Use for uplink)

Hi,

Since this is for server connectivity, I recommend you look at the Nexus series.

Here are a couple of links for 9300 series as well as 5600 series

Hi -

For server room 10G, I think that Catalyst 3850's are really expensive for what you get.  You could easily substitute with a Nexus 3524 and get a significantly better bargain.

Throwing your BOM in CCW gets me an MSRP in the $43K range for a single switch (including SFPs and 24x7x4 SmartNet).  You can save about $4K by going with an IPBase License instead of Enterprise Services, which I chose.

I put together an equivalent Nexus 3524 and got an MSRP of $22K (N3K-C3524P-10GX + L3 license + 8 SFP bundle).  At that price you can give the customer full switch redundancy (vPC & HSRP) and 48 ports of 10G connectivity for almost the same price as your single 3850.

If you need copper ports to go with your build, then add Catalyst 2960X (2960X-48TD-L or 2960XR-48TD-I) switches with 10G Twinax uplinks (SFP-H10GB-CU3M).  You will significantly beat the cost of your 2nd switch, provide double port density, and 10G uplinks.

The support for Catalyst 3850-24XU-E is the same as for 3850-24XS which is listed in the compatibility guides for both 1 Gbps and 10 Gbps transceivers:

http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/interfaces-modules/transceiver-modules/products-device-support-tables-list.html

The NM-8-10G is supported in that platform and each port on it supports either 1 Gbps SFP or 10 Gbps SFP+ transceivers:

http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/switches/lan/catalyst3850/hardware/installation/guide/b_c3850_hig/b_c3850_hig_chapter_011.html

That would include a mix of SFP-10G-SR, GLC-SX-MM and GLC-SX-MMD as you describe.
