I have a 2509 ios 12.3 (19) access router which was working till transceiver failed.
Received new transceiver and installed.
I have green lights for rx , tx ,pwr, (pol is yellow) on transceiver attached to aui on 2509
Interface e0 shows interface up protocol down
I assigned an ip add of 172.16.1.2/ 16 to e/o interface
laptop is consoled in
laptop speed & duplex is auto for gig ethernet
laptop Ethernet port add is 172.16.1.1 /16
fire wall is off on laptop
internet wireless disabled
Ethernet port on laptop shows green
what I have tried so far:
set port speed on laptop to 10mb half duplex (no change) put back to auto
added default route on router (ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 e0)
enabled ip routing
until I can get communication btw my laptop and router 2509
none of the above would matter....
Suggestions?

Hello,
line protocol down means either a cabling speed,or duplex problem. The 2509 is a very old model, which transceiver have you purchased ?
Also,as far as I remember, you need a crossover cable to connect a PC/Laptop directly to the Ethernet0 port...

thanks for getting back to me...
I thought the same so tried to set speed & duplex manually but it made no difference.
If I go into settings on laptop it shows speed at 10 when set to auto detect ( can force to 10mbps half duplex but saw no difference when done and it appears to step down from 1gig to 10mbps when set to auto)
I am using a crossover cable 1to3, 2to6, 6to2, 3to1,
transceiver s are link-max and connectionware, (I have 2)
The link -max settings has both switches up for SQE enable(hp-link hp853)
The connectionware 98098-5 code 9607-S has switch setting toward center (unable to find setting missing documentation... bought from ebay) (horizontal switch 2 position I think with switch setting closest to rj45) I believe this just turns on/off the SQE setting.
both show green when connected
connectionware shows 7 lights ... pwr lite (green) rxlink (green) tx (green) and POL (yellow)
collision, jabber and sqe are not lite
Link-max show 4 lites pwr, link, col and jab... only pwr and link/rx are on (green)
If I turn on "debug ip packet" and ping from laptop to 2509..."ping 172.16.1.2" reply from 172.16.1.1destination host unreachable
if I ping from router to laptop I see s(172.16.1.1)local d(172.16.1.2) len 100 unroutable.
So I added a default route "ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 e/0" to router
however if I do a "show ip route static" (nothing shows)
added Loop0 (10.10.10.1) to router
did "show ip route" and Loop0 is displayed nothing else
Is their a diagnostic I can run to confirm aui port is good?

Hello,
try the 4 wire crossover cable:
1 - 3
2 - 6
3 - 1
4 - 7
5 - 8
6 - 2
7 - 4
8 - 5

Still have issue; no solution has been found. I ordered a new transceiver and plugged it in.
with new installed transceiver installed the connection on the Ethernet 0 goes up then down repeatedly. then stays down!
swapped to gig cross over cable made (2)
all lights are lite
pwr |on| green
tx link| on| green
rx link| on| green
pol link| on| yellow flashing
col| off| red
jit | off | red
the green transmit and receive ligh are flashing and computer shows it is sending packets out but receiving nothing back. disabled firewall on pc
set address of pc to 172.16.1.1
ip add of e/0 is 172.16.1.2 on router
again protocol is now down after going up and down repeatedly
I don't know why but I swapped computers and the ping went thru for about 10 minutes then just stopped which I thought was an intermittent transceiver issue...so I ordered a new one.
when running debug interface Ethernet it shows
ntp NTP information
2509#debug ethernet-interface
Ethernet network interface debugging is on

Hello,
try and configure 'no keepalive' on the Ethernet interface, and check if that makes a difference.
By the way, the first time I have seen the error '%LANCE-5-LOSTCARR' was around 1995. How old is your router ? The end-of-sale date for the 2509 was 2004, so yours must be at least 12 years old. Chances are that the hardware is just malfunctioning...
