2960-S POE switch not supplying enough power for 1252 WAP(s)

HI all,

I have been unable to use POE from my 2960-s switches to power my Cisco 1252 WAPs. 

"Show power inline" reports  the power as15.4 Watts, "Ieee PD" Device and Class "3". 1252s need about 20 Watts and the command shows 30 Watts Max is available. Setting the power to static 30 Watts seems to make no difference.

Show version  on the switch returns (with serial numbers removed):

Without good reason I am assuming this is a switch problem but incase the details (with serial numbers removed) of the WAP(s) are

The device is plugged into port 7 and port 3 is where I tried setting the static power.

Show config Gi1/0/7 returns:

Is the "Ieee" all the time?  If your answer is YES then I'm suspecting that you have a faulty cable.

Can you then do a TDR test.  Here is the process:

1.  Command "test cable tdr int g 1/0/7";

2.  Wait for about 6 seconds;

3.  Command "sh cable tdr int g 1/0/7"

Thanks again. Yes the port the wap is plugged into always shows Ieee. The wap is sitting on top of the switch, both on the bench beside me. The wap is plugged into the switch with a brand new 1M cat 5e patch lead. the test result shows

Ok.  That's a bizzare situation.  I have a significant amount of 1250's and alot are connected to 1250 (more than one per switch) and the only time I've seen the "Ieee" staying there all the time was when I have a faulty cable.

This may or may not fix the issue but can you enter the interface-level command "power inline consumption 20000"?

Thanks again. I did a config t, int gi1/0/7, power inline consumption 2000 which succeded ok. I then backed out and did a show power inline and got:

The wap is still not working and showing a flashing red LED indicating it is running in low power mode.

Try upgrading the IOS.

Its going to take quite a while to get through all the internal channels to convince the holders of the support contract number I need to update the WAP IOS.

I have this IOS operating successfully at 2 other sites where the WAPS have been converted to run in lighweight mode. With this in mind and from the help you have given me I'm beginning to think this is a wap configuration issue rather than a switch one.

I have never seen a WAP configuration that could cause this.  Is CDP enabled on the port and AP?

CDP is enabled on the switch but not on the WAP. The command "show CDP" on the WAP returns "% CDP is not enabled". I have limited access to these WAPs so I dont think I can enable it easily.

That's probably it.  Get the owner of the AP to enable CDP and let us know.

Great, I had enough access to enable CDP on the WAP  Ethernet interface and everything seems ok. Show power inline is reporting auto power setting and 20W.
