We have a WS-C3650-48TQ currently running IOS-XE version 03.03.04SE.

Switch Ports Model              SW Version        SW Image              Mode

------ ----- -----              ----------        ----------            ----

*    1 52    WS-C3650-48TQ      03.03.04SE        cat3k_caa-universalk9 INSTALL

We have the following bug which JANET UK are on our case about and we must fix:

https://tools.cisco.com/bugsearch/bug/CSCuj66318

I have downloaded the latest software cat3k_caa-universalk9.SPA.03.06.03.E.152-2.E3.bin.

I tried to install the software using the guide here:

http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/switches/lan/catalyst3650/software/release/3se/system_management/configuration_guide/b_sm_3se_3650_cg/b_sm_3se_3650_cg_chapter_010101.html

and I get this error:

3650#software install file tftp://X.X.X.X/cat3k_caa-universalk9.SPA.03.06.03.E.152-2.E3.bin

Preparing install operation ...

[1]: % Failed to determine package type for file tftp://X.X.X.X/cat3k_caa-universalk9.SPA.03.06.03.E.152-2.E3.bin, operation aborted

Any ideas please?

Thanks.

Hi,

Could you copy the image first to the flash: using the regular "copy tftp flash:" command? Also is there any chance for you to use a USB flash to copy the image to the flash?

Regards.

Did you verify that you completely downloaded the cat3k_caa-universalk9.SPA.03.06.03.E.152-2.E3.bin file the size is 302890264 bytes

Thanks for replying, looks like the software install command doesn't quite work over tftp.

I copied the file over using the regular copy command as you suggested and I was then able to successfully run the software install command. Thank you.

I have since found on the Cisco bug list that the software install via a TFTP server does not always work

I had this same issue on a 3850 stack...

software install file usbflash0-1:xxxx.bin failed...as did software install file flash-1:xxxx.bin

Copying the file to flash: and then  software install file flash:xxxxx.bin solved the issue.

Hi, glad you got it to work too.
