6509 Question

Just a quick question and hopefully someone can answer this without too much trouble.

We have a 6509 with some empty module slots in it.   We've recently ordered a WS-X6716-10GE module to plug into the 6500.

I'm just curious are these just a matter of plug and play or is there something that needs to be done in order for these to go into the

6500?

Also, do they require a reset of the 6500?  And once they are plugged in, will the 16 10G interfaces pop up in the config?

Thanks in advance!

They are plug and play and they do not require a reset.

So yes you should be able to put it in and the interfaces will show up.

One note of caution - i have done a lot of these and 99% of them were fine but you do get the occasional one where the whole system can reset. So out of hours is always best but you should be fine.

Finally, never force the module in, if it's not going in it's because you haven't aligned it properly.

One other thing i forgot to mention.

Check the release notes for the new linecard to make sure that your current IOS supports the card. If it doesn't it won't crash the system or anything but it simply won't come online.

Ok, will do.   Should the fact that I have two 6509's hooked together via VSS make a difference as to how they are inserted, or can i just put them both in as suggested above?

Thanks again for your help!!

The procedure for VSS and non VSS cards is the same so you should be fine.

I believe the 6716 comes standard with a DFC.  I recall for some combinations of DFC and supervisor, OIR will not bring the card on-online although a full system reset should.

Just make sure you are using Sup720 card.

Yep, it's a Sup720!   Thank you all so much for all your help!  You guys are stinkin amazing!   How in the world do you

all learn all this stuff?  I look stuff up constantly and can't seem to find the right answers.

You guys are like little genius' in a box

Thanks again for all of your help!

Just be aware of Joseph's comment, which i had forgotten to be honest. It may be, because of the DFC, that the card will not come up even if the IOS supports it without a reset.

Again you can insert it and even if it doesn't come up it won't harm the system.
