Router CPU is staying high. Any ideas. No changes to configuration in a while.

Hello Rgoble,

most of cpu usage is caused by interrupts with low load on processes

CPU utilization for five seconds: 91%/>>>>87%<<<<; one minute: 88%; five minutes: 90%

see the following document on how to investigate further

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/routers/ps359/products_tech_note09186a00801c2af0.shtml

Hope to help

Giuseppe

Will Do. Thanks!

After pursuing this with TAC it was determined that the router was getting taxed by the QOS and ACL's configured on the router. Suggestion was to upgrade to a ASR1002. The upgrade is complete and this router is running at 2% CPU as opposed to 98% CPU on the 7206. Basically the same configuration.

Hello Rgoble,

nice to see your feedback.

An ASR 1002 is a newer platform and it is not a SW only based router, it has hardware to perform QoS and ACLs filtering (ESP) so the main cpu is far less used then in C7200.

It has also much better performance on the data plane.

Hope to help

Giuseppe
