Advice on OS of server/pc for SNMP monitoring of Router

Hello,

I am planning to set up EMS/SNMP monitoring using server/pc for my Cisco switch, router and firewall. It will also used as as snmp trap and tftp server for router/switch software upgrade.

Appreciate very much if what is the best option for OS, either WinXp or Linux of the pc/server to accomplish this task.

the server/pc will be on 24/7 and i am looking for simple-to-configure, reliable, friendly way to do this job. Somemore, it should not be easily crashed.

btw: snmp software might be solarwinds, mrtg.

thanks in advance

I don't think the OS matters either way with regards to monitoring the switches/routers/firewalls via your EMS/SNMP application.

The application you are using is more important, what exactly can it do? Can it poll and receive traps? Does it allow for more manual scripting (prob better to use unix)?

I have seen both solarwinds and mrtg work fine on either OS.
