The standards are open, but you do need to be aware that not all equipment supports the same versions of STP that uses them.
Also, when Leo notes "All switches talk BPDU.", also keep in mind non-managed switches don't run STP. Such switches will pass the BPDUs along, but you can loop your L2 topology on such a single switch or a combination of such joined switches.

So far I thought as Leo all switches were running STP (802.1d at least)?
Maybe I was not buying the right "supercheap" ones, but have you really met a switch not running any STP?
