Hi,
I'm working for a customer who asked me to check why their C6800-16P-10G wasn't working as expected.
They're running 15.1(2)SY4a which doesn't meet the minimum required release: 15.2(1)SY.
Which IOS would be preferred? They're now running MD release and are "forced" to upgrade to an ED release... while checking the open caveats in the existing ED releases I'm having doubts in advising a suggested release to go to (keeping in mind they're currently running MD releases in a VSS cluster).
regards,
Jeroen

Hi Jeroen -
Can you be more specific on the problem? It doesn't seem logical that the system would be up and running in the first place if it couldn't run 15.1(2)SY4a.
Why do you say that the system doesn't meet the minimum requirements? Are you going off a bug ID?

they are running 15.1(2)SY4a.
in order to get the card working they'll need at least 15.2(1)SY.
Since the running IOS is MD and the required IOS is ED I was wondering if there was any suggestion which ED IOS is most stable to run.

Jeroen

Hi -
The next time you post, please include more supporting information, like:
"This customer is running a Catalyst 6807 with Sup 2T modules. The switch is currently running 15.1(2)SY4a. We are attempting to add a C6800-P16-10G module, but the hardware doesn't seem to be supported by the current IOS based on the release notes. The first release notes we find support for this hardware is 15.2(1)SY0."
Then I don't have to go do all the research myself to try and help you.
That aside, here's the answer:
ED means "Early Deployment" and MD means "Maintenance Deployment". The latter means that Cisco has issued a patch for bugs found in previous code versions while the former means that Cisco is issuing a new version to support new features or hardware.
Since every version of 15.2(1) is an ED version, I would recommend choosing a release that is at least 60 days old to make sure that Cisco isn't going to find a bug immediately and issue an MD release.
