CACTI in conjunction with PRTG/MRTG good for monitoring?

Hello everyone,

We have a very big network where we have the cisco switches, routers, Firewall, ACE Module(for load balancing)and the servers.

We want to do the efficient monitoring and analysis of the above devices.

We have already used many tools before. But we want to have a look at the other good tools also and see if they are better than the previous ones.

I was suggested CACTI in Conjunction with the PRTG/MRTG. I have read about PRTG and i was impressed. I also read a little about CACTI on its website.

I want someone to enlighten me fufther Whether these two or any one of them can be a very good option for monitoring the above cisco devices.

Anyone who have used any of/both these softwares please let me know how good these softwares/tools are, What good features they have. whether they can provide sufficient stats.

Any help for the above topic is appreciated.

Hello Vishal,

if you haven't already done you should repost this under the network management forum.

I used MRTG for the first time in 1999 and I have seen it used in service providers, banks and big entrerprises.

MRTG PRTG are based on the same database engine RRDtool as CACTI.

I see that CACTI may use data sources other then SNMP like the answers to scripts so it can complement MRTG/PRTG in this sense.
