cannot see mac address on switch port

Hi all,

I have following problem: I cannot see the MAC address of a printer on a switch port that is configured as trunk port with as native VLAN the data VLAN.

The printer was initially configured with an IP address from the range of the Data VLAN then was changed to get an IP dynamically. But it didn't work in both cases.

Then i changed the configuration on the switch port to be a "switchport mode access" and to be int the data VLAN and then it worked and i saw the MAC Address on the port.

Could someone please give me an explanation for that?

(printer was rebooted many times and cable and switch port are working fine)

Thanks in advance,

Yosri

A trunk port is different to an access port, the latter learns the L2 address of the node and the interface it's connected to, it is also in a VLAN.

A trunk port is used so that multiple VLAN's can traverse it (typically used to interconnect switches), this is why DHCP did not work for you.

You have configured the correct mode.
