capacity(bandwidth) of a layer 3 “VLAN” interface

Hi All,

Do you know what will be the capacity(bandwidth) of a layer 3 “VLAN” interface ?

For example we have 10 GIG (TenG) interface assigned to VLAN 100 running at full capacity will generate 10GB of traffic

If the default interface bandwidth of Vlan 100 is 1GB, whether the remaining 9GB of traffic will be discarded ?

Hello,

the bandwidth parameter is an administrative parameter used by routing protocols like OSPF or EIGRP for metric calculations, and in modular QoS to assign resources to queues.

The bandwidth parameter does not reflect or influence the real speed of an interface, and it does not lead to any form of user traffic limitation like policing or shaping,

So in your example, whatever is the bandwidth associated to the SVI VLan 100 L3 interface, the network device will use the 10 GE full rate, if it is able to do this ( from a performance point of view in terms of packets per second and aggregate traffic volume).

On the other hand, to have a user traffic limitation you have to configure a service policy with police action or at physical 10GE interface or at SVI interface level.
