capturing wireless traffic

Hi,

We want to capture traffic for user wireless traffic, due to some disconnections & ip problems.

Ours is a Wireless service module in cisco 6500 switch.

How do i setup a sniffer on a pc so the wireless user traffic is found. which is the best place to do this for multiple users in the environment.

thanks in advance.

Hi,

The problem is a wireless NIC can't be put into promiscuous mode on Windows machines but you can do it with linux or using airpcap usb adapter for windows.

thanks, but which would be the best place to place the sniffer in to get all these detail packets & what will the configuration look like on the switch side.

Hi,

you shouldn't need anything special on the switch side, just use a machine with a sniffer like wireshark installed and sniff on the wireless NIC in promiscuous mode and use a capture filter to only capture the useful infos.

Alain
