Hello all
I just purchased a couple of 2950 switches for my CCENT lab and immediately encountered a problem! I cant seem to use a serial port connection(DB9 to USB converter) the cable is doubtlessly ok, however when I open a session in putty I get a prompt that does not move. I have tried all the recommended baud speeds and other settings, gone through the documentation, but have had no luck. Even telnet and SSH do not work , Could someone help with ideas as to how to get this fixed?

Hi,
Does your PC/laptop recognize the USB to the DB9 converter? After connecting it to the router you should be able to see its property in the "devices and printers" section in a window environment. Also, you may want to re-install the driver for the converter and test again.
Also, what happens if you turn off the router, connect the cable and then turn it back on?

Hi
I think not all the DB9-USB could be supported. Try:
- Verifying the COMM port (administrative settings)
- Try with Putty
- Baud speed 9600
- Try with other adapter.

Thanks for answering !
Yes I installed the drivers and the port is listed as COM 3 which i have tried using in putty, with 9600 and 115200 and 67500 and so on. I guess it could be that the switch's previous owner might have changed the port speed to something non-standard for security or whatnot. And I used wireshark to locate the switch's ip but the session times out, so i guess it could be the line vty settings. Long story short, it seems im completely locked out :). Any suggestions ?

From initial bootup, any setting in the config for the vty port would not take effect until the config is loaded so I would have assumed that you should see all the POST stuff from power on with Putty set to 9600,8,1,N
