Hello,
can someone explain how to properly use both the ip interfaces and the switch interfaces on the Cisco 1811. I have tried to set the router up with vlans on the switch portion and ip addresses on the ip interfaces. That isn't the problem. When I try to communicate between the switch portion and the ip interface portion, I don't get the communication that i thought I would get. Is there something I need to understand? Because I can use two separate devices, (router and switch) and get the results that I need but not with the integrated device of the 1811.

Likely you need to define SVI(s) for your switch ports.

Hello,
You have to define sub-interfaces toward the switch using the SVI and define a sub-interface for each VLAN with dot1q encapsulation.
