Cisco 2811 with NM-16A as Terminal server

Hello,

I am currently looking for a Cisco terminal server solution to remotely access through console my private Cisco home lab. I am thinking of buying Cisco 2811 but I struggle to figure out the difference which ASYNC/SYNC MODULE to use. So, my question, is it possible to use NM-16A module with Cisco 2811 or HWIC-16A module must be used? And what is the difference between them?

I found on Cisco website that NM-16A is not supported on Cisco 2811, however some forums stated that it is possible.

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/ios/interface/configuration/guide/ir_nm16as.html#wp1027188

Your help is deeply appreciated.

Thank you,

Arik

Hi Arik,

It is definatly supported for the 2800 series including 2811.  Here is the part number and description

HWIC-8A, HWIC-16A

High-density 8-port connector

• High -density 8-port EIA-232 asynchronous cable (CAB-HD8-ASYNC)

• High-density 8-port asynchronous cable with eight DB-25 modem connectors (CAB-HD8-KIT)

Reza,

Thank you for your replay. Actually, my question was related to NM-16A module. I do know that HWIC-16A is supported and reason to go with NM-16A card is cost. HWIC-16A module is twice expensive than NM-16A.

Arik,

The NM-16A is supported in the older models i.e. 2600, 3600, etc...

The old NM-16A is 68 pin Octopus interface and the new ones

HWIC-8A are the smart serial connectors that is supported on 2800, 2900, 3800, etc...

Thank you,

Arik
