I have a question about a Cisco 2960S switch. The switch has 24 Gigabit copper interfaces. A block of 8 ports has the media-type unknown when issuing the command "show interface status", like shown below.
Port Name Status Vlan Duplex Speed Type
Gi1/0/17 ACCESS-POINT notconnect 1 auto auto unknown
Gi1/0/18 ACCESS-POINT notconnect 1 auto auto unknown
Gi1/0/19 ACCESS-POINT notconnect 1 auto auto unknown
Gi1/0/20 ACCESS-POINT notconnect 1 auto auto unknown
Gi1/0/21 ACCESS-POINT notconnect 1 auto auto unknown
Gi1/0/22 ACCESS-POINT notconnect 1 auto auto unknown
Gi1/0/23 ACCESS-POINT notconnect 1 auto auto unknown
Gi1/0/24 ACCESS-POINT notconnect 1 auto auto unknown
I cannot connect anything to the ports, so it looks like they are physically broke. The strange thing is that I cannot see any error messages in the log or anywhere else. Has somebody seen this before?

RMA the switch. I think there's something really wrong.
06-11-2013 12:42 AM
Errrr ... Can you post the output to the command "sh post"?
If my suspicion is correct, I am not going to like the result.

Hahaha, here is the output.

Thanks. My suspicion is incorrect.
Can you post the output to the command "sh version"?
Have you tried to reboot the switch? If you haven't, reboot the switch and post the entire bootup process.

I performed a reboot, but I don't see any strange output.

Can you try this:
conf t
default interface range Gi 1/0/17 - 24
end
If the ports are still the same, try upgrading the IOS to 12.2(55)SE7.
06-11-2013 04:39 AM
Putting the interfaces in default configuration didn't help. I upgraded the switch to 15.0(2)SE3, but still the same result. I am getting more and more the feeling that something is physically wrong with these switch ports.
06-11-2013 04:49 AM
RMA the switch. I think there's something really wrong.

RMA Means Return Material Authurization ???

Indeed, Return Material Authorization. Below is the link to the RMA portal:
