I have a Cisco 5020 and justw ant to verify that I can't assign an ip to an interface not can I set up a layer 3 vlan. also want to evrify that it is the mgmt0 that gets an ip to allow remote connectivity??

Yes, 5020 is pure layer 2 device. You can only assign IP to its management interface as following link.
