Cisco router 4331 with 8-ports SW module

hello Folks,

I have received a Cisco 4331 IRS router, IOS XE. the router has 8 Ethernet port switch module. I have not configured an ISR router with Cisco XE IOS before ( done a Cisco 2911 ISR router tho- no switching module). I have been reading through various configuration guides and have some idea however, I still don't know how I can access the Switch module and how to make Router and Switch talk to each other. I need to create vlans on this Switch module as well. the Guide n Switching module I have been reading is for Cisco router 4551 ans not 4331 ISR so I am not sure if they are different configuration wise.

I would appreciate if you folks can point me ot right direction on how to approach configuring this router.

I have no problem configuring the router interfaces and static routes but the switching module and high speed SFP Ethernet ports, sort of confusing.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated as I will lear about this iSR router while configuring it for operation. We are not service provider and we wil not have fancy configuration, router will face the Internet tho. a Sonic wall FW will be behind it so router will sit between the provider and the Sonicwall with Sonicwall doing the NAT.

I am firing up the router and will start the basic configurations like what is listed in Cisco configuration Guide but do not know how t go any further like to configure the Switching module and have it talk to the router. I read that I need to give and IP address to Ether0/0 service module and use that to telnet to the Switch. I do not even know the name of the Switching module at this point.

I am sorry for this long question but I wanted to be as clear as I can be explaining the situation.,

Best Regards,

Masood

Hi,

Regardless of the router model, the command to access the switch module is:

hw-module session 1/0

Once you are in, you can configure an IP address and do the rest of the configs.

config guide:

https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/routers/access/interfaces/eesm/software/configuration/guide/4451_config.html

Thank You Reza.

I will try this on the bench and see how it goes.

So, no matter what router 4331 or 4551, this is the command? I was reading that I need to apply an IP address to the service module so to telnet to that Ip to get to the Switching module!?

That is correct.

Once you session to it, you can give it an IP address and so, you can remote to it after that via SSH and/or Telenet.

Thank you Reza. I am now playing with Cisco 4331 ISR Router. I need to get familiar with how this router + Switching module work.
