When I insert the TwinGig Converter in a Catalyst 4900M you get the following error message:

%C4K_TRANSCEIVERMAN-3-SEEPROMREADFAILED: Failed to read transceiver serial eeprom on port Te2/1, try reinserting

This error is probably because the device expects 10Gig transceivers to be connected to the device not 1Gig.

I used the TwinGig 4 module and 8 SFP ports are connected.

But when i type in the the "hw-module module <slot> port-group <group> select gigabitethernet" the command is not available.

Please advise whether i my current IOS version doesnt support.

Hi Vinoth,

Error Message:C4K_TRANSCEIVERMAN-3-SEEPROMREADFAILED: Failed to read transceiver
serial eeprom on port TE2/1, try reinserting

Explanation: A transceiver with a serial EEPROM has been detected in the port referred to in the message, but the read of the serial EEPROM's contents failed. It is necessary to read the serial EEPROM to determine what sort of transceiver it is. Sometimes the read fails because the transceiver is not seated correctly.

Recommended Action: Try removing and reinserting the transceiver. If this message still appears after that, try the transceiver in another port, to verify that the transceiver is bad, and not the port. If the transceiver fails in another port, return the transceiver, as the transceiver must be reprogrammed for it to work. If the transceiver succeeds in other ports, but not the original port, that implies that the original port is bad, not the transceiver, and the module needs to be returned, to fix the port. As a further test of the port, other transceivers could be tried in the suspected bad port. If these other transceivers also fail in that port, it is very likely that the port is bad.

Regarding your command problem:

The TwinGig converter module is supported with Cat4900M for the WS-X4908-10GE half card only, not for the base X2 ports, as TwinGig requires additional port ASIC which is not on baseboard.

Please see the data sheet (table 1) at:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/switches/ps5718/ps6021/ps9310/Data_Sheet_Cat_4900M.html

Kind Regards,

Please rate if it helps.

Refer to Selecting X2/TwinGig Convertor Mode for more information.

Here is the sequence:

1. Insert the module and it will give the following error.

%C4K_TRANSCEIVERMAN-3-SEEPROMREADFAILED: Failed to read transceiver serial eeprom on port Te2/1, try reinserting

2. Add “hw-module module 2 port-group 1 select gigabitethernet” command

*Apr 15 03:07:56: %C4K_GLMMAN-3-X2INTWINGIGCONVERTERHOLE: X2 inserted in port Te2/2, which is configured for a TwinGigConverter

    4w4d: Port Te2/1: TwinGig Converter inserted: vendor: CISCO SYSTEMS, p/n: 800-27645-01, s/n: FDO12140G92

So it will detect the TwinGig module.

3. Insert GLC-T in left side of TwinGig and it will detect the GLC-T as Gi2/9 port.

Also keep in mind on these TwinGig converters in the 4900M, the next 2 ports in that hardware group can only be gigabit, you cannot make the next port in the hardware group 10 gig once you have selected gigabit as the speed for that hardware group, so if ports 1 and 2 are gigabit then ports 3 and 4 can only be gigabit. This is a hardware limitation.
