Combine SFP+ and 10G UTP?

Hi There,

We'd like to know when we get a stack of 3X C3850's each with a 8X10GB SFP+

We need at least 18 fiber connections, however we also need 6 UTP 10GB connections as well.

The 10GB UTP comes from an ancient ESX host with intel 82599eb 10-gigabit UTP Interface cards.

So a special kind of 10GB UTP cable has to be inserted in some way to the 3850's.

Is it even possible to have a 10GB UTP cable fit into a SFP+ slot with a specific type connector maybe?

Or should we consider other options like providing the ESX hosts with HBA's or an extra 3850 with 10GB UTP module maybe?

I don't like the idea of touching the ESX hosts...

Thanks en best r, Erik

Hi,

Not sure if I understand what you are trying to do, but you can't use copper cable (UTP) on the 10gig ports of the 3850.  If the ESX hosts have fiber NICs, you can simply use fiber (LC to LC) from the switch to the servers or the other option is to use Twinax cables if the  distance from the switch to the server is less than 10 meters.

Twinax
