Complex Network Design - Require assistance and issue with understanding "ip domain name" command.

Hi all,

I have a question, the ip domain name command.

Does using this command requires all cisco devices to use the same or what, I have never understood this command usage,

Does this command tells the device if:

e.g.

ping PC1

the device will ask the DNS server what is the ip of PC1

-----------------------------------------------------------

My lab is broken, some stuff work, some doesn't especially the Server, once the server was connected to the switch with the appropriate access vlans etc, the Windows Networking Profiles  -  assigns that to a domain network, which make the whole network switches etc cant reach the server.

Any ideas?

Thanks

I have attached my diagram for reference.

My understanding is that it just tells the device what to append to the unqualified name. So if you have the "ip domain-name example.com" and you ping PC1 from the Cisco device it will ping PC1.example.com.

However, it's the "ip name-server [ip address of DNS] that tells the Cisco device where to direct the DNS query

Hope this helps
