I m trying to connect 2 catalyst switches as trunk using cat6 crossover cable ( around 30m )
The ports are enabled , the cable is tested and both ports set to trunk :
Catalyst 3650G & Catalyst 2960
The problem is that , there is no lighting when connected. and both ports stay down.
Do you guys have any troubelshooting / solution for this ?
Thank you for your support.

Hi,
Did you try other ports? Did you try other cable? what is output of sh interface?
Are you just linking 2 ports with a single cable? Can you do a sh run interface
Regards.
Alain.

- I tried 2 cables ( both cat6 , different companies ) and both same result
- I m linking the 2 ports to be used as trunk
- sh run interface :
interface GigabitEthernet0/23
description Connected to roof cat6
switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q
switchport mode trunk
end
interface GigabitEthernet0/1
description Connected to Core Switch
switchport mode trunk
end
- the following is the sh interface for both switches :
GigabitEthernet0/1 is down, line protocol is down (notconnect)

Hi,
GigabitEthernet0/23 is down, line protocol is down (notconnect)
Hardware is Gigabit Ethernet, address is
Description: Connected to roof cat6
MTU 1500 bytes, BW 10000 Kbit, DLY 1000 usec,
The Delay and Bandwidth values are not good, these are the ones for an ethernet port
GigabitEthernet0/1 is down, line protocol is down (notconnect)
Hardware is Gigabit Ethernet, address is
Description: Connected to Core Switch
MTU 1500 bytes, BW 1000000 Kbit, DLY 10 usec,
reliability 255/255, txload 1/255, rxload 1/255
Encapsulation ARPA, loopback not set
Keepalive not set
Auto-duplex, Auto-speed, link type is auto, media type is Not Present
That's not cool either.
Could you try on 2 other ports.
Regards.
Alain.

Hey Alain,
It is the same on all ports.
is there anyway to edit ? or reconfigure ,
i tried to set both ports to default using command : default interface
and then reconfigure to trunk.
but with the same result.
the port is not getting up.
Thanks again for your help.

Hi,
Can you plug a PC in these ports and get connectivity?
Can you try with a cat5 cable.
Regards.
Alain

Hey Alain,
- Cat5 cable works
- I can plug 2 laptops and get 1gb connectivity with ping
- also i just tried to connect f0/48 to g0/23 and it works using the cat6 cable , but when i connect g0/1 to g0/23 no lights, port dont get up
Thank you for your help

ok,
So now we know the cable is good indeed, the port is functional but there is something going between these 2 ports when using this cat6 cable.
Can you statically define the duplex and speed setting to full -1 Gig on two interface and see it it is working then.
Regards.
Alain.

I tried to set it from 1 side on the 3650G ( tried the duplex and half duplex and changing speed to 10 & 100 & 1000 with no successs ) , because on the 2960 48ports switch with 2 giga ports , i cant set speed or duplex.
Best Regards,

hi,
ok, the G0/1 is a dual-purpose uplink port
Can you try this : under Gig0/1 enter media-type rj45
Try againg and tell us.
Regards.
Alain.

Thank you alain,
Sorry for the late reply,
I will try this on monday
and will reply with the results.

Hello Alain,
I tried to set media-type rj45 but still i got no lights
Thank you alot for your suggestions.

If you console into the 3560G, run a TDR to determine where the problem is. Here's how you do it:
1. Command: test cable tdr int
2. Wait for about 5 - 7 seconds; and
3. Command: sh cable tdr int
Please post the output of the command.

Thank you leolaohoo, for you reply,
