DHCP Server Port-Based Address Allocation

Hi,

I want to configure cisco 4500 switch as the DHCP server for a VLAN and have it assign one IP address per port. I followed the steps in the article below, but  the client is assigned with a different IP address than the one is configured for that port. These end clients are client routers configured to receive IP address from the DHCP server.

http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/ios-xml/ios/ipaddr_dhcp/configuration/12-2sx/dhcp-12-2sx-book/dhcp-prt-bsd-aa.html

I also noticed that when there is a client switch connected to this port on 4500 , all the end hosts connected to the client switch were getting IP address and I would like to restrict that as well. That is only allocate single IP address per port. Please let me know if this can be done.

Hello Midhun,

the document link that you have reported refers to industrial ethernet switches

>>The DHCP Server Port-Based Address Allocation feature provides port-based address allocation support on the Cisco IOS DHCP server for the industrial Ethernet platform. The DHCP server provides address assignment support based on the point of attachment of the client to the network.

Your C4500 is a standard switch so I'm afraid that this feature is not really supported on it.

The related commands can be available on the CLI shell, but the feature may be not working as you are noting in your tests.

Hope to help

Giuseppe

Hi Giuseppe,

Thanks for your response. Is there a way to one IP address per port on 4500? I found the following article to do a static mapping using a text file located on tftp server, however it looks like other way of doing the same thing, which I tried earlier. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Port security can limit you to 1 mac address - however, that's one mac address, not one CONCURRENT MAC address.  If you unplug a PC, you can't just plug in another PC...
