Hi all, when we have an atm network, what kind of physical connections are they normally, can it be any type, ethernet, fiber etc, and why do providers use this over normal ethernet ?

ATM is a layer 2 protocol, so it is independent of the media for the most part. ATM was originally used because it uses fixed sized cells (53-bytes). This made it easy to design ASICS around as well as provided an easy way to provide QoS on voice and video.

A lot of ATM networks are now moving to MPLS or 10G Ethernet.
