Hi!
I would like to enable ping on a cisco router from time to time for test purpose.
I know that by default cisco router come icmp disabled for security purpose.
Is there a way to enable this without any interface hang or reset if we want to do it from distance?
What is the best practice in this case?
Thanks!

Hello Simon,
I know that by default cisco router come icmp disabled for security purpose.
No, I do not believe this is correct. Cisco routers (and switches) come with ICMP including ping enabled by default, and there is no specific configuration required for Cisco routers to respond to pings. To my experience, it is PIX and ASA that come with pings disabled - however, routers respond to pings out of the box.
Do you have a different experience? Is there any ACL used on your router that might filter out the pings? Alternatively, is it possible that your ISP is blocking the pings?
Best regards,
Peter

Hi Peter,
Thanks for your answer.
We looked at the ACL, ICMP protocol etc. Everything seems to be ok.
We changed the router for a new one: Same problem, no ICPM ping!
We called the ISP to change their router that they used for the Static IP (acting like a bridge). No succes at all.
We tried to call the ISP to ask if they block the ping or ICMP packets and they say no.
At other offices, ICPM is working with the same ISP!
I hope someday I will find the solution. I'm pretty sure it's a setting at the ISP.
Thanks again for your help,
Simon
