To run a full-duplex , the Ethernet port must carry out an auto-detect mechanism .
1)Can a switch run on a half-duplex mode?
2). There are no collisions in a full-duplex ,so what happens in with the switch where each segments is it's own collision domain?

Yes.

A broadcast collision domain and an ethernet transmission collision are very, very different. Duplex collision is Layer 1 of the OSI and the other is Layer 3.

forces is better than both ends to full duplex, autonegotiation can you have in a system of half-duplex half-duplex without collisions. in the worst case is that on one side you have half-duplex and full-duplex another which you would have collisions.
