Hang during boot of Cisco WS-C4948-S switch

TonnyRomm

Hello,

I encountered an issue while trying to boot Catalys WS-C4948-S switch. I power on the switch and I'm able to see the boot messages thourgh serial console cable. But it gets stuck at line "Image text-base: 0x1000000, data-base: ..... ". Also I can enter into rommon mode. I tried to use different kinds of IOS images, tried to boot from tftp but with no luck, the issue is the same.

There are no erros on the screen, it just gets stuck when it enters into IOS, so I don't see the IOS prompt.

What could be wrong ?

Hi,

Try the follwing stuff:

Issue set command to see what is the current bootvariable, config register configured in rommon

rommon> set

if the bootvariable is incorrect then clear the bootvariable and set the new bootvariable.

rommon>BOOT=

rommon>BOOT=bootflash:

rommon>sync

++ check if the image present is not corrupted and also check the memory requirements of that ios if required.

++ If the above options doesnt work, then load the device with any ios and from the CLI set the bootvariable pointing to the right image and do a wr mem. Ideally this should work !

Useful rommon commands:

rommon>priv

rommon>sync

rommon>reset

rommon>dev

Hope this answers your question

If this doesnt resolve the issue raise the tac case for further troubleshooting or straight away create an rma and get the device replaced.

HTH

Inayath

Inayath, thank you for the reply, I tried your tips but this didn't helped me very much.

Trying to set the BOOT variable I got :

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

rommon 6 >BOOT=bootflash:cat4500-ipbase-mz.122-54.SG.bin

Error: 'BOOT' can not be set/unset directly.

You can set it only from IOS.

Type 'clear boot' to clear it

Using TFTP I tried to load different IOS images with no success, it always stuck at the line :

"Image text-base: 0x1000000, data-base: ..... ", so I never get to see the IOS prompt :-(

Any ideas which could help ? Is this really a hardware issue ?

Post the entire bootup process.

So basically it passed all self tests and should enter into IOS without problems. But it just stuck, I don't understand how this could be. Never saw such behaviour for Cisco switches.

I think you need to RMA.
