You can either configure a backup router as a hot spare or use a First Hot Redundancy Protocol such as HSRP for automatic failover.
Using a hot spare is fine if you are ok with manually swapping out the devices. The downsides being that you will have downtime and you need to ensure any changes to the live router are updated on the hot spare. How long will it take (worst case scenario) for someone to swap them out? Can you afford that amount of downtime.
I would be looking at HSRP or similar to be honest, a hot spare is thing of the past really.
