Hello,
I am afraid I do not quite follow you. Can you perhaps post a transcript of your console session to the switch, showing the failed attempt to configure it?
Best regards,
Peter

Hello,
The command syntax is
power inline consumption default VALUE
so for example:
power inline consumption default 10000
for 10000 mW default consumption for devices whose power budget is unknown. See the command reference for details on this command:
But is this what you are trying to accomplish? Can you be more specific about what exactly you want to achieve?
Best regards,
Peter

now I get the message
%CAUTION: Misconfiguring the 'power inline consumption/allocation'
command may cause damage to the switch and void your warranty. Take
precaution not to oversubscribe the power supply. Refer to documentation.

Hi,
Let me put it this way: with default settings (i.e. no modification to the PoE configuration), most PoE devices will run just fine without risk of damaging them or the switch. The PoE is on by default, the max allower power on each port is 15.4W (which is the maximum for the PoE standard) and the switch will adapt to the actual power consumption of the attached device if possible (i.e. it will subtract less power from the overall power consumption budget if the device does not require that much power). In essence, it's plug&play.
I suggest modifying the PoE settings only if you know that they do not fit your current needs.
Best regards,
Peter

It is a compact 2960 series switches that have really POE
02-26-2011 02:12 PM
Hello,
There are certain models of 2960 series Catalyst switches, including the compact switches, that have the PoE support (i.e. the provide the Power over Ethernet to attached devices - but they cannot be powered by PoE themselves!)
The exact model comparisons, including the indication of PoE support, can be found here:

POE but why that function at power inline consumption default

If you happen to have a PoE swtich then PoE is enabled by default.

I have a problem how do I configure C2960G POE?
With a brick. There is NO SUCH THING as a "2960G" that supports PoE.
The only 2960 that supports both Gig and PoE is the new 2960S and 2960CPD-8PT.
