How does a child switch ( catalyst 4500 ) port channeled and trunked to a core switch ( catalyst 4500 ) gets IP

Hi All, we have two catalyst 4500 series switch. With one switch already existing in production,we have got one more switch that is placed in different server room. We have connected these 2 switches through cabling . We have configured port chanell and trunked the 2 ports between the switches . Now when users connect to this new switch they are not getting IP. What are we missing here? 

1. Port channle is fine

2. Trunk is fine

3. Configured a default route in child switch to point to core switch.

4. We can see arp of the main switch in child switch configuration.

Please advise.

Slightly confusing in that the new switch seems to be acting as a L2 switch but then you have configured a default route on it ? 

Where are the L3 vlan interfaces for the user vlans ?

Hi John,

We have sorted the problem but ended up in another interesting one. The
initial problem was we did't configured ip default gateway and we didn't
presented the Vlan. After doing these , we found that desktop users are
getting IP . But sad part is our requirement also included phone users but
further checking we came to know this switch was bought for data only and
it is not for PoE. Now we are thinking how to sort this problem as we need
users to be able to use internet as well they need phone connection . When
i looked into the new switch interface I got to know it is not supporting
inline power.

For PoE, you'll either need to replace the line cards with those that are PoE capable (also insuring the chassis has enough power to support the demand) or you might use power injectors.

Hi , Can you please brief the details. What do you meant by replacing the line cards ? -Can we replace the line card with any of the available switch and replace here . Currently we have 4506 E series Cisco switch ( WS-X45-SUP8-E' )

Model: cisco WS-C4506-E.

I mean you obtain a line card (i.e. one with Ethernet copper ports) that supports PoE. For example, the WS-X4748-UPOE+E provides up to 60W to each port while the WS-X4748-RJ45-E does not provide PoE.

With a sup8 and 4506-E chassis, you can pretty much use any 4500 line card, although some cards will only work with some IOS versions. I.e. later line cards tend to require later IOS version. Old line cards may no longer be supported by the latest IOS versions.

Again, keep in mind, if you use PoE cards, your chassis power supplies will need to be large enough to support you overall power demand. I.e. you often need larger (NB: in wattage capacity) power than what non-PoE cards, and sup, require.

Thank you all. We were able to sort out the connectivity problem. Now we have two switches connected in Port channel and trunked . We now have one C3850 and one 4500 series switch. After configuring both the switches, we got to know few users are not getting IP in their desktops. Any reference or lead here ? what to be checked ? We cleared DHCP binding with no luck.

What is giving out DHCP leases? Core Switch or a seperate DHCP server?
