Good Morning,
A quick question regarding intervlan routing on a Cisco Catalyst 6509. We have 2 WS-SUP32-GE-3B supervisor modules. Multiple VLANs are created on this switch, and there there are a couple of 3500 switches trunked to it which are vtp clients, so they receive the vlan trunking. Intervlan routing is currently working. What I want to verify is that the intervlan routing is actually being done on this 6509 switch, and not the router. All of the documentation I have read indicates that the command IP Routing needs to be used to enable this, but I cannot enter this command as it says it is an incomplete command. IP multicast routing is enabled and was by default, but reading about it, it seems that may serve a different purpose. Can anyone advise on how to determine if the switch is currently serving as a layer 3 switch doing the intervlan routing? Thank you.

Andrew,
IP routing is enabled by default on the 6500. If you have created the SVIs for your vlans on the 6500 with corresponding IP addresses and if you have a PC with correct default gateway in each vlan and you can ping from one PC to the other, then intervlan routing is working on your 6500. Also in this case 3500 switch should be layer-2 only.

What isthe default gateway for one of the hosts (PC, server, etc) that you are testing from? If the default gateway IP Address belongs to the core switch, then the core switch is doing the routing for you.
Not sure how the router comes into play in this scenario- is it a WAN router connected off the core switch for Internet access, etc?

please find the link which points out the IOS versions which supports default intervlan routing without enabling ip routing.
