IOS update error

I'm trying to update the OIS for 3750x-48P-E switch to c3750-ipbasek9-mz.122-55-se4.bin and got the following error:

Error: hardware not supported by firmware.

          try loading newer software instead.

          System Resetting...

The rest of our 3750x have this IOS.  I tried to revert back to the old OIS c3750e-universalk9-mz.122-58.SE2 but the switch wouldn't respond to the # boot system switch all flash command.

Any ideas?

You'll need to run "flash init" to bring the flash online, then you should be able to try and boot the old software.

Once you get it running can you post the output of "show inventory" so we can confirm the switch model.

Also I would upgrade 3750s using the "archive download-sw ..." command and use the tar packages.  It does everything for you, and wont allow a non-compatible image to be installed.  It also handles stack upgrades nicely.

Thank you for the reply Philip.

I did the flash_init and tried to boot the old OIS but got "Boot process failed" error because of no such device.  Maybe its been corrupted.  I need to TFTP to the switch again and copy the older OIS but I can seems to break into the switch.  I tried unplugging the unit power cord, held the mode button and plugged it back in but no luck.

switch: flash_init

Two things:

  1. I'm not seeing that version as an available download for the 3750X-48P-E.
  2. The command you're running boot c3750e-universalk9-mz.122-58.SE2 is failing because that is a directory, not a bootable image file.  Try boot c3750e-universalk9-mz.122-58.SE2/c3750e-universalk9-mz.122-58.SE2.bin

jjohnston1127,

I had to delete  c3750-ipbasek9-mz.122-55.SE4.bin and then was able to boot c3750e-universalk9-mz.122-58.SE2/c3750e-universalk9-mz.122-58.SE2.bin.

The switch is working again using the old IOS.  Thank you.

What puzzles me is that we have several C3750X-48P-E switches that are already running c3750-ipbasek9-mz.122-55.SE4.bin.  Why is this one getting errors :-(

Use the "archive download-sw ..." command and use the tar packages and you can't go wrong.

Thanks Philip....that's going to be my next move :-)

Got the following error when using "archive download-sw ..." command for .tar

That means the *.tar file is corrupted - but at least it checked before installing it, otherwise you'd be left with an unbootable switch ...

What version of software is currently on the switch?

SW Ver 12.2 (58) SE2

So you are trying to downgrade the software, from 12.2(58)SE2 to 12.2(55)SE4?

I wonder if something has changed in the upgrade progress which makes it trickier to downgrade the switch.

I went to look into this, and 12.2(58)xx has been withdrawn.  I don't know why, but this is a bad sign.

The current release in that train is 12.2(55)SE10 - so at a minimum you should be using this release.

However 15.0(2)SE9  is a gold star release - and as a result this is the release I would use.

The below comment is correct as its a directory.

Also earlier it failed because its not compatible image. You need to use image starting with c3750e on it. Please use this link to download the correct image

https://software.cisco.com/download/release.html?mdfid=284655163&softwareid=280805680&os=&release=15.2.4E1&relind=AVAILABLE&rellifecycle=&reltype=latest&i=!pp

Thanks,

Madhu,

Thank you for your reply.  We have numerous WS-C3750-48P-E that are currently running c3750-ipbasek9-mz.122-55.SE4.bin

I was able to boot this switch with the old IOS.  Please let me know if you can think of anything that could shed some light to this issue :-)

Thanks again.
