Jumbo Frame Across Multiple Switches

Hi,

I hope someone can help me with this question.

My network is set up as the diagram.

I now need to turn on Jumbo Frames on to VLAN 30 for a storage network.

To do this, i need change the mtu to 9000 on Switches A+C+D

By doing this....will this cause any problems with the connectivity between Switch A+B or the Servers Plugged into Switch A or B?

Are there any problems with any devices or servers using the default MTU which are plugged into switches running at Jumbo Frames.

What other problems will i have with Jumbo Frames?

Thanks for all your help.

James

Hi James,

Is it just IP your using in this network? If so, I dont imagine you'll have any problems. IP hosts uses MTU path discovery when communicating to determine the maximum MTU size each host supports. Eg. Hosts on switch C/D will not send jumbo frames to hosts on switch B.

We run our network with a mixture of switches that do and do not support jumbo frames. Yo ujust need to make sure that the full path requiring jumbo frames supports it otherwise its all a bit of a waste.
