Last Mile Connectivity to SONET Ring

This is regarding last mile connectivity to a SONET rign. From what I understand SONET is mainly used as a backbone network by service providers.

So if i a company wants to connect to a SONET ring, would it be possible?

What kind of device is used for that connection? For example, for FRAME Relay, one should use FRAD, so for SONET, what device has to be used? I assume that the media used for that last time to SONET ring should be fiber. I am new to WAN and I am trying to learn different technologies available.

Another question is regarding the backbone network itself. Would backbone networks alwas use fiber?

Hello,

SONET connectivity is usually provided by means of and add-drop multiplexer (ADM), or some multi service access platform (such as the one in the link provided). Hand-offs can be Ethernet or fiber.

The equipment is typically placed at the customer location by the provider.

Thanks.

I have few more follow up questions.

From your reply I understood that the provider would keep either an ADM, or some multi service access platform equipmenet at customer location and they would connec the edge router to this equipment and the equiment will be connected to SONET ring.  Please correct me I am wrong.

You also said, hand off can be done by Ethernet or fiber. I am confused as you mentioned Ethernet protocol and fiber (media) together. I assume you were referring Ethernet cable ( copper cabling) and Fiber. Am i right?

If that is the case, what would be the protocol used to transfer data between ADM to SONET ring? From what I remember SONET can work only on Fiber, so how is it possible to connect ethernet cable between ADM and SONET ring?
